Oxygen and Ozone Therapy
At Enclave Dental, we are committed to providing safe, effective dentistry -- and a key part of that effort is protecting your teeth and gums from infection. But because the mouth harbors millions of bacteria (both good and bad), infection-control poses a significant challenge in holistic dentistry. When “bad” bacteria multiplies and outnumbers the good, infection occurs. Dr. Preetha Thomas uses oxygen/ozone therapy to safely treat and control infection while also supporting the surrounding healthy tissue.
Oxygen/Ozone Therapy: How It Works
Oxygen/ozone therapy treats oral infections with something called a transient oxidative burst. Infectious bacteria has no defense against this rapid occurrence -- and in addition to killing the bad bacteria, the burst also improves blood flow and enhances the mouth’s immune response for a faster recovery.
Because a number of infections can occur in the mouth, the applications of oxygen/ozone therapy are wide. At Enclave Dental, we use the technology to treat gum disease, to eliminate infections in the root canals during endodontic treatment, and to treat dental caries (cavities). The latter application is especially effective in younger patients, as it requires minimal to no drilling of the tooth.
Significant Benefits of Oxygen/Ozone Therapy
For patients who prioritize safe, comfortable, holistic dentistry, oxygen/ozone therapy is a wonderful solution for healing oral infection and promoting better dental and overall health. The benefits of this technology are many -- some of the most common are listed below.
- The oxidative burst promotes better, faster healing.
- The therapy reduces or eliminates the need for drilling in healing infection from tooth decay (filling cavities).
- There is significant scientific evidence to support the use of oxygen/ozone therapy for infection control in dentistry.
- Oxygen/ozone therapy presents no risk for allergies, as ozone is merely an energized form of oxygen -- something we all need to live.
Because it is impossible to be allergic to oxygen/ozone therapy, anyone with an oral infection (from minor cavities to severe tooth decay and gum disease) can be a good candidate for the treatment. Discuss oxygen/ozone therapy with Dr. Thomas during your next dental appointment.
Science Supporting Oxygen/Ozone Therapy
Oxygen/ozone therapy has been around for ages and has benefitted from significant testing and scientific research since its inception. In fact, the concept of using energized oxygen (ozone) to eliminate infection in dentistry was first introduced in the early 1900’s. In the last few decades, we have gained a better understanding of how oxygen/ozone therapy works, and its applications have spread -- especially in dentistry. The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology recently reviewed and accepted the treatment as scientifically valid.
