Building Your Immunity for Flu Season
December 9, 2020
Cold and flu season is here. Besides washing your hands often and using personal protective equipment, what else can you do to keep your body healthy during the upcoming months ahead? You might want to start on the inside to build your body’s immunity to combat illness. Your holistic dentist in Southlake recommends you balance your pH level to prepare for the upcoming flu season.
What Causes Your Body to Become Acidic or Alkaline?
Your body can become too acidic for various reasons; however, the largest cause is the foods you eat, such as coffee, soda, meats, or chocolate. In addition, stress levels and how you choose to deal with it can also influence the acidity. Unfortunately, changing your diet and reducing your stress won’t always make your body more alkaline.
How is Acidity Measured?
The pH scale measures the level of acidity in your body, which ranges from 0 to 14. If it isn’t acidic or basic, it’s considered neutral. Believe it or not, your blood has an acid/alkaline balance. It’s essential it’s perfectly balanced to ensure your body has the defense it needs from the inside out. An improper pH level causes an unhealthy growth of organisms, tissue damage, and a weakened immune system,
The recommended pH level for your body is 7.36. Unfortunately, most people are too acidic, which limits the body’s ability to repair damaged cells. It will also make you more susceptible to disease and illness.
How Can I Change My pH Balance?
If your pH balance is too high, your body can’t function it’s best. You can help correct the levels by eating more alkaline foods. To aim for a pH balance of 7, incorporate alkaline-producing foods, such as:
- Spinach
- Broccoli
- Carrots
- Cauliflower
- Collard greens
- Strawberries
- Wild rice
While adding them to your diet, there are also a few acid-producing foods you’ll want to avoid, including:
- White flour
- Meat
- Eggs
- Sugar
- Chocolate
- Cream cheese
- Coffee
- Soft drinks
- Fruit juices
How Do I Know If I’m Too Acidic?
As you prepare for cold and flu season, take the time to measure your body’s pH level using strips available at your local pharmacy. If you have any signs of being too acidic, it’s best to check your pH levels, such as daytime fatigue, headaches, chronic pain, or an overall sense of sluggishness. You can also use the test strip if you suspect you’re too alkaline, which can cause a variety of symptoms, including nausea, vomiting, confusion, or muscle twitching.
Build Your Immunity
Besides checking your pH level, ensure there aren’t any hidden issues affecting your immune system, like infections. Your dentist in Southlake will check for signs of gum disease to keep your mouth healthy to support a strong natural defense system.
