If you have ever done much reading about holistic dentistry, you have probably come across the word “biocompatible” more than a few times. Have you ever wondered why biocompatibility is such a big deal? What does it mean for something to be biocompatible, and why are biocompatible materials so important? Continue reading below to discover some important information.

Biocompatible — What It Means

If something is biocompatible, that simply means it works well with living tissues. Biocompatible materials should not contain any toxins or common allergens; they should not be injurious; and they should not cause any physiological reactions that lead their host body to reject them.

Some Common Materials Are Not Biocompatible

Some materials that are often used in dentistry are not biocompatible. For example, many people still have fillings made of silver amalgam. Amalgam contains mercury, which is known to be toxic. Although some dentists might insist that it is safe, the truth is that fillings can emit vapors that cause patients to experience significant illness. The more metal fillings you have, the more likely you are to notice symptoms.

There is also some concern about other metal-based restorations, such as metal crowns. Even titanium implants, though they tend to be safe for most people, can lead to potential complications. In fact, metal implants might interact with other metals in the mouth and lead to a complication known as galvanic toxicity, which is associated with a burning sensation and metallic taste in the mouth.

Holistic Dentists Advocate for Biocompatibility

While the above information might seem a little scary, there is good news! More and more dentists are insisting on using biocompatible materials in their practice. For example, amalgam fillings have been made almost completely obsolete by composite resin fillings. Many patients are opting for metal-free crowns, such as those made of ceramic or porcelain. Zirconia implants are also becoming increasingly common.

Biocompatible materials are often just as durable as metal-based materials, and they have the big advantage of working well within the human body. They are very unlikely to cause negative side effects, meaning that they can play a key role in supporting your overall wellness.

Many conventional dentists offer biocompatible materials, but holistic practitioners like Dr. Thomas are particularly passionate about doing so. If you are concerned about the quality of what is being used in your mouth, a holistic dentist can answer your questions and provide reliable advice.

Your mouth is the gateway to the rest of your body, and the materials that go in it are important. Remember, biocompatibility matters!
