What Are Biocompatible Dental Fillings?
December 20, 2023
According to one estimate, more than 90% of people will develop a dental cavity at some point in their life. This extremely common oral health issue used to be treated with silver amalgam fillings. Although such fillings are moderately effective, they have some serious drawbacks — such as the fact that they contain toxic mercury. Today, though, better alternatives are available. Here at Enclave Dental, Dr. Thomas always uses biocompatible dental fillings. Would you like to learn more about this restorative treatment? Read on below.
An Introduction to Biocompatible Dental Fillings
The word “biocompatible” is used to describe materials that work well within the human body. They pose very little risk to the surrounding tissues, and they are free of ingredients that are known to be toxic.
Biocompatible dental fillings are completely metal-free. They are usually made out of materials that are widely acknowledged to be safe for human tissues. Plus, many patients appreciate the fact that biocompatible fillings are white in color; they blend in beautifully with the tooth enamel that surrounds them. Most Composite resins contain BPA as an ingredient in it, however Dr. Thomas uses BPA and fluoride free composite resins.
Benefits of Biocompatible Dental Fillings
Here are some of the most outstanding benefits of biocompatible dental fillings:
- With proper care, they can last for many years.
- They require minimal tooth preparation because they actually bond with the surrounding dentition. This is in contrast to silver amalgam fillings, which simply sit inside of a cavity.
- Since biocompatible fillings bond with the surrounding tissue, they are less likely to allow bacteria to sneak around them and attack the tooth’s interior.
- Composite resin fillings are not highly reactive to temperature changes. This means they cause minimal sensitivity and will not damage the surrounding enamel due to expansion and contraction.
- Biocompatible fillings do not stain the surrounding dentition.
Should You Replace Your Old Fillings?
If you have old silver amalgam fillings, you might wonder if you should get them replaced with a biocompatible alternative. Dr. Thomas can perform safe mercury removal (SMART Protocol) so you can be protected from inhaling the toxins from your old restorations. It’s never one size fits all approach and proper diagnosis is needed to extend a safe alternative. Dr. Thomas would be happy to help you make a decision.
