How Important Are Dental X-Rays?
June 7, 2023
It is standard practice for dentists, including both conventional and holistic ones, to take X-rays of their patients’ mouths. This routine diagnostic service can prove to be a valuable tool for helping you to maintain a healthy smile. Just how important are dental X-rays? This blog post explains.
What Do X-Rays Accomplish?
A dental X-ray machine uses radiation to produce images of a patient’s teeth and bones. It provides a detailed view of areas that are difficult or even impossible to see with the naked eye. For example, it can let Dr. Thomas see what is happening beneath your gumline and in the tight spaces between teeth.
An X-ray allows Dr. Thomas to diagnose a range of issues, such as infections, cavities, problems with the development of teeth, and more. It can even enable her to identify problems long before they start to cause pain or other noticeable symptoms.
In short, X-rays can play a vital role in helping patients enjoy sound oral health.
But… Are X-Rays Safe?
Some patients have expressed concern about X-rays because they use radiation. Of course, you are free to withhold consent for any dental or medical service. However, there are a few important points that you should keep in mind:
- Modern dentists tend to use digital X-rays, which use up to 90% less radiation than conventional X-rays.
- Digital X-rays expose you to approximately 2 or 3 mrem of radiation. That is a very small amount when you consider that you are exposed to similar amounts of radiation each year from everyday sources. For example, you are exposed to around 3.5 mrem of radiation when you fly from coast to coast in the U.S.
- Dr. Thomas and other responsible dentists use protective gear to minimize their patients’ exposure to radiation. Dr. Thomas is also determined not to overuse X-rays in her practice.
- The potential benefits of X-rays far outweigh any risks. Their use is in harmony with the guiding principles of holistic dentistry.
How Often Should You Get Dental X-Rays?
If you are a new patient of Dr. Thomas, she may ask that you get a full set of X-rays taken. Thereafter, you will get X-rays taken once every two years. If you have a toothache or are preparing to undergo an advanced procedure, additional X-rays may be required.
Dental X-rays are important! If you have any questions or concerns about this diagnostic tool, Dr. Thomas would be pleased to speak with you.
